| The
background Graffiti
is an ever-increasing
problem in Waitakere City.
Part of the problem lies
in apprehension of the
taggers followed by appropriate
consequences and punishment.
|
| |
| Prevention is ultimately
the best way to reduce
graffiti in the future,
as more and more young
people are being caught
for committing this offence.
Unfortunately the age
of offenders is getting
lower which keeps them
out of the reach of the
law. This means we have
to act as a community
to stop them re-offending. |

| Graffiti
education Tag Out
Trust assists schools
in dealing with tagging
by speaking to certain
individuals or groups
on graffiti awareness,
consequence and punishment,
sharing information on
graffiti control, removal,
and volunteer services.
We also help educate young
people that it's not a
'cool' thing to do and
that if they try tagging,
there will be consequences
for those illegal actions.
|
| |
| The police, Waitakere
City Council and Youth
Justice are taking a harder
stance against taggers
so it's no longer going
to be so easy to offend,
let alone re-offend. Many
young people are not aware
of the implications attached
to being caught for tagging
or the effect it could
have on their future.
|
| |
| We inform students of
these implications and
try to persuade them to
get involved in alternative
activities. Activities
that also encourage them
to take pride in their
community, volunteer to
eradicate graffiti in
their area or assist in
Community Paint Out days.

| Adopt
a Spot More and
more schools are becoming
Adopt a Spot volunteers,
taking care of walkways,
fences, park facilities
and self-done murals near
their school. These volunteers
remove graffiti as soon
as it appears with paint
supplied by Tag Out Trust.
The tagger then gets no
recognition for their
scribble, knowing it will
be wiped out instantly,
so they are less likely
to return. |
| |
| It is also an activity
schools could use for
their detention students.
If you would like to know
more about becoming a
volunteer, projects involving
students for murals or
educational talks please
feel free to contact us.
|
| |
| We are happy to either
send the information or
come and talk at your
school. |

| Graffiti
Rangers The Waitakere
City 'Graffiti Rangers'
are young volunteers and
are an essential part
of Tag Out Trust's community
prevention programme.
They are the eyes and
ears in the neighbourhood
for identifying and reporting
graffiti to Tag Out Trust,
Waitakere City Council
and the police. The rangers
work in a similar way
to Neighbourhood Watch
groups but they look out
for new graffiti and taggers.
